E. Gomme was founded in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, in 1898 by Ebenezer Gomme and his brother-in-law Jim Pierce, making chairs. In 1953, with the wartime Utility scheme finally over, his grandson Donald Gomme launched G Plan. The name came from the J. Walter Thompson agency, from "the Gomme Plan, a plan for living". The idea behind it was quietly radical: ranges designed to coordinate in style and dimension, so a household could buy one piece now and match it years later. The V&A puts it plainly, calling it the beginning of modular furniture for the mass market.
The pieces people want are the ones from the teak years. V.B. Wilkins, the in-house designer, drew the Fresco range from 1966 and the Brasilia range of 1964, and the round and oval occasional tables the trade now sells as Astro. In 1962 Gomme commissioned the Danish designer Ib Kofod-Larsen for G Plan Danish, built in teak, afrormosia and rosewood, and it remains the most sought-after and most valuable thing the company ever made. Prices reflect it: plain teak sideboards trade in the hundreds, a good Fresco sideboard commonly between one and two and a half thousand pounds, and Kofod-Larsen case pieces well beyond that.
